Bok Women 'to start from zero again'
It’s a new week, new challenges, with the same goal of reaching the quarterfinals for the Springbok Women.
The Springbok Women’s team has a massive target on their back following their incredible win over Brazil, said centre Zintle Mpupha.
South Africa’s 66-6 victory over Brazil was a statement of intent.
The side scored 10 tries in the opening round, pushing them to the top of Pool D, with France sitting second after their victory over Italy.
“It was a great start,” Mpupha said, adding: “I think we’ve put a target on our backs right now.
“But the sad thing about sport is knowing that whatever we did last weekend doesn’t matter this weekend.
“We have to remind ourselves to start from zero again, start all over, and build on that.”
While it’s a feat that needs to be celebrated, this week the team faces one of their toughest assignments – Italy.
Unlike Brazil, who are currently ranked 25th in the world, Italy sit eighth – making them a significantly tougher challenge for the 12th-ranked South African side.
A win will ensure the Springboks book a quarterfinal spot, which is the ultimate goal for Swys de Bruin’s side.
Mpupha acknowledged the flair and skill the Italians bring, but emphasised that the Springboks are focusing on their own game.
Italy has beaten the South Africans on two occasions: 36-18 (WXV 2 in 2023) and 23-19 (WXV 2 in 2024).
“We’ve played them in WXV. They brought the flair. They’re a very skilful team.
“We’re just really focusing on ourselves this weekend and knowing what we’re going to bring as a team.”
Utility forward Catha Jacobs echoed her teammate’s optimism, saying that the Brazil win gave the team a valuable confidence boost.
“There were a lot of positive moments and strong connections in how we played last weekend. Going forward, that’s definitely going to help us a lot.
“We focus a lot on our set pieces, so that’s a big thing we’ll take forward.”
Jacobs has urged local fans to support the team as they take on Italy at the York Community Centre on Sunday.
“We know there are a lot of South Africans living here in the UK, so definitely come out and support the girls.
“We love the support – we need it. So come enjoy the game.”
