Etzebeth saga: Outcome to sink Bok legend's Test career?
SPOTLIGHT: Springbok legend Eben Etzebeth is in scorching hot water following his moment of madness for an eye gouge on Wales flanker Alex Mann in Cardiff last weekend.
The match was set and done. Etzebeth scored the Boks’ 11th try in the 73rd minute before a moment of madness broke out during a scuffle where his thumb made contact with Mann’s eye five minutes later.
Etzebeth was sent off with a permanent red card following his actions.
His hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, with the outcome likely to be revealed on Wednesday, December 3.
Meanwhile, Mann has been cleared of any foul play for a similar offence, which sparked debate amongst the rugby public following an image doing the rounds on social media stating that Etzebeth had been provoked earlier in the match by the loose forward.

What’s the best v worst outcome for Etzebeth?
Various factors come into play.
Sanction entry points for contact with the eye area start at 12 weeks (low-end), rising to 18 weeks (mid-range) and 24 weeks (top-end), with an absolute maximum of 52 weeks in the most serious cases.
On the more serious front, if eye contact is deemed reckless or intentional, a maximum ban of up to 208 weeks (four years) could be imposed, effectively ending Etzebeth’s playing career.
Mitigation can reduce the sanction by up to 50 percent, depending on the player’s disciplinary record.
Etzebeth received four yellow cards, including this red card, which was his first in a Test career spanning 13 years.
