From Kraaifontein to Times Square: Kolbe’s story goes global
SPOTLIGHT: From the streets of Kraaifontein to the bright lights of New York’s Times Square, Cheslin Kolbe’s journey is a powerful story of resilience, determination and defying the odds.
The Springbok superstar has become one of the most influential players in world rugby, overcoming challenges that once threatened to stand in the way of his dreams.
Now, Kolbe’s remarkable journey is reaching an even wider audience, with a global billboard campaign promoting the launch of his memoir, Sidestepping the Odds.

Arranged by his agency, Roc Nation Sports International, three high-profile billboards have been unveiled across two prime locations in Cape Town and the iconic Times Square in New York City.
Published in October, Sidestepping the Odds chronicles the formidable obstacles Kolbe faced on his journey to the top and the relentless determination that helped him overcome them.
Co-written with award-winning journalist and broadcaster David O’Sullivan, the memoir traces Kolbe’s rise from Kraaifontein to the biggest stages in international rugby.
It also offers a glimpse into his childhood, growing up in an environment surrounded by crime, drugs and violence.
Despite being told he was too small to succeed in rugby, Kolbe refused to let his circumstances dictate his future.
He began his professional career with Western Province and the Stormers before moving abroad, representing Toulouse and Toulon in France before continuing his career in Japan. Along the way, he established himself as one of the most recognisable players in Springbok rugby.
Kolbe returned to the Stormers this season, alongside Wilco Louw and Siya Kolisi.
However, the star is currently sidelined after suffering a broken jaw during the Greatest Rivalry Series against All Blacks.
“I grew up in a world surrounded by crime, drugs and violence, and I was told that I was too small to play rugby,” Kolbe said.
“I refused to let those challenges get me down. I want this book to inspire young people, as well as others who have been told they are not good enough.
“I want them to know that they too can rise above all expectations, that they can start believing in their abilities, and also remember that their current circumstances do not determine their future.”
Roc Nation Sports International president Michael Yormark echoed Kolbe’s sentiments, describing the campaign as a significant moment in celebrating the Springbok’s inspirational story.
“It is such a special occasion to celebrate Cheslin’s inspirational book. We wanted to help amplify the launch of his memoir as aggressively as possible, and these outdoor billboards are a powerful example of just that,” Yormark said.
“It is a true testament to how dreams can come true through hard work and determination. I cannot wait to read this book.”
