Griquas claim title No.5

Griquas were crowned Vodacom Cup champions after beating the Golden Lions 30-6 in the Final in Kimberley on Friday.

The Lions came into the game as the underdogs and in the end were completely dominated by the hosts.

The Lions drew first blood in the second minute, with flyhalf Willie du Plessis slotting an easy penalty.

Griquas replied with a drop-goal by flyhalf Francois Brummer to level the scores.

Du Plessis had another couple of shots at goal, but missed on both occasions. He was successful with a drop-goal to help his side to a 6-3 lead over the home side.

Griquas fullback Gouws Prinsloo slotted his first penalty of the match to make it 6-all.

Prinsloo slotted another penalty in the 33rd minute to give the hosts the lead, which they stretched to 10 points after some good pressure and a try by Brummer.

Prinsloo converted to make the score 16-6 in favour of the Peacock Blues, as the sides headed to the interval.

Griquas started the second half with an immense effort, putting pressure on the Lions with some good defence and clever attacking play. The result was two converted tries in the second stanza, while the Lions could not manage to add a single point to their total.

First it was replacement wing Danie Dames that went over in the corner, with Prinsloo converting.

Then flank Marnus Schoeman crossed the whitewash, and Prinsloo converted to help give his side a comprehensive victory.
