Is this the end of Mzansi League?
REACTION: The departure of the most recognisable face of the Mzansi Rugby League could spell the end of the proposed new competition.
Former Namibian World Cup captain Renaldo Bothma has revealed that he has officially stepped away from the Mzansi Rugby League.
The MRL was formally launched in South Africa last month, although it has been in the planning stages for months and was scheduled to kick off in 2027.
The venture has received strong pushback from the South African Rugby Union and the trade union MyPlayers.
Bothma announced on Monday that he has officially stepped away from all involvement with the MRL, effective immediately.
It places a big question mark over the future of a competition backed by the profile and influence in the market.
Monday’s decision follows an extended period of collaboration during which Bothma contributed to the MRL’s conceptual and strategic development.
While he remains supportive of initiatives that aim to grow and professionalise the game in South Africa, he has chosen to withdraw in order to focus fully on his other projects and commitments.
“I remain passionate about South African rugby and about building platforms that create genuine opportunities for players and communities,” Bothma said.
“At this stage, I believe stepping away from the MRL is the right decision for me personally and professionally,” he added.
Bothma extended his best wishes to those continuing with the project and reiterated his ongoing dedication to rugby development through his organisation, Octafield, which continues to drive innovation, education, and community upliftment within the sport.
