Is this the end of the road for Jurie Roux?

NEWS: Jurie Roux, the former Chief Executive Officer of the South African Rugby Union, may have reached the end of the road in his protracted battle with the University of Stellenbosch.

Sport24 reported that the ruling of Western Cape High Court judge Vincent Saldanha went against the 52-year-old Roux.

That means Roux now has to pay back ZAR37-million, along with interest.

There is the possibility of taking the matter to The Supreme Court of Appeals or the Constitutional Court.

However, Roux and his lawyer, Frikkie Erasmus, did not immediately respond to enquiries from @rugby365com about whether they are going to exercise those options.

On December 31 Roux ‘stepped down’ from his role as SARU CEO – a position he held since 2012.

The decision to step down followed Roux’s long-standing legal battle with his former employer, the University of Stellenbosch.

Roux, in December 2021, lost his appeal and was ordered to personally pay back more than ZAR37-million to the University of Stellenbosch.

Roux was ordered to repay the huge sum of money – which an arbitrator found he had misappropriated from Stellenbosch University, between 2002 and 2010.

The audit firm KPMG submitted a preliminary report to the university in 2013, which found that Roux had manipulated the finance system to channel millions of unbudgeted expenditures into the rugby club.

Roux held senior positions in the university’s finance department and had been accused of manipulating the electronic accounting system.
