Keep it simple Springbok Women says September

The Springbok Women are set to face a formidable challenge in their final pool match of the 2025 Rugby World Cup, taking on France this Sunday.

Following a remarkable two-week campaign – which included emphatic victories over Brazil (66-6) and Italy (29-24) – South Africa now prepare for a decisive fixture to determine the top position in Pool D.

The team has already made history by becoming the first South African women’s rugby side to qualify for the World Cup play-offs, a significant milestone for the game in the country.

A win against France would further solidify their progress and send a powerful message to the remaining teams in the tournament.

However, the Springbok Women are approaching the match with measured focus. According to assistant coach Franzel September, the team is maintaining a straightforward and disciplined approach in their preparations.

“We are aware that France possess a strong set-piece game, but our primary focus has been on refining our own systems,” September told reporters.

“For us, the key is simplicity.

“We also take pride in our set-piece execution, and we look forward to the challenge.

“Our goal is to finish this phase of the competition on a strong note.”

The winner of Sunday’s encounter at Franklin’s Gardens will go on to face the runner-up from the New Zealand v Ireland fixture, set to take place at Brighton & Hove Albion Stadium – and vice versa.

When asked about his expectations for the tournament moving forward, September emphasised the importance of maintaining focus on the immediate task.

“Our objective coming into the World Cup has always been to perform at our best.

“For now, our sole focus is on the match against France.

“Reaching the quarterfinals has already been an extraordinary achievement – it has been an emotional and inspiring journey over the past two weeks. We are confident heading into the next phase.

“However, at this moment, our mindset is firmly set on France.”
