The 34-year old started his provincial career at the Leopards before going on to represent teams such as Griquas, the Cheetahs and the Lions.

"During our assessment and evaluation process, Jonathan showed that as a coach he has the same vision as he had on the playing field. We were immensely impressed with his enthusiasm and ideas for taking rugby in this province and at the University forward," said Mervyn Taylor, rugby manager of the NWU-Puk's Rugby Institute.

"He has all the skill, talent and passion required to build on our past successes and forge an even brighter future. We wish him the best of luck and welcome him as part of the North-West University family," Taylor concluded.

Mokuena will be the first coach of colour to be at the helm of a university during the Varsity Cup (excluding the Shield, hostel and junior competitions).
