Coetzee was officially unveiled as the new Springbok coach on Tuesday and he is not about to make any radical changes to the way the Springboks play ahead of the three-Test series against Ireland, which starts in June.
"There is nothing wrong with the way we played, because we always said that we will play to strengths of South Africa," said Coetzee, who was addressing media at his unveiling in Johannesburg.
"I will maintain that and make sure we keep doing what we are good at.
"We are renowned for our physicality and it is just that other countries have actually excepted that challenge and they have gotten better at that.
"We just have to be a bit smarter in the way we want to use our physicality. "
While he is confident in the way he wants the Springboks to play, Coetzee knows that they will need to improve their attacking game.
"The area of focus is always about attack. We also saw in Super Rugby that a lot of coaches are encouraging more ball in hand.
"I am a firm believer that in the game of rugby there are different areas to put pressure the opposition. If it's not the kicking game, set piece or defence – then somewhere it must be on attack.
"We must look at our speed of movement on attack and that is one thing I will really focus on and see how quickly we can generate ball.
"The next thing is about decision-making. We have to put a lot of emphasis on our tactical decision-making, especially on our No.9s and No.10s to make the right decisions," Coetzee added.
Coetzee, who will be assisted by Johann van Graan (forwards) and Mzwandile Stick (backline), will have the freedom to choose the best players available this year after it was confirmed that the status quo regarding overseas-based players would remain the same.
"I think going forward it would be remiss of us to not look seriously at our policy of allowing national players to play their trade overseas," said SARU President Oregan Hoskins.
"We understand that our currency is weak.
"We acknowledge the fact that our players must make a living and they are doing it in better currency-based jurisdictions, but we have to put South Africa first and we need to look seriously as we go forward."
