PREVIEW: BlitzBoks primed to make global statement

SPOTLIGHT: If the BlitzBoks win the 2026 SVNS World Championship, they will put a massive stamp of dominance on the global event after also claiming the title in Los Angeles last season.

While last year’s world championship was contested in a single, one-off tournament in North America, this year’s event consists of three tournaments in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux.

The Springbok Sevens side overcame their Hong Kong hoodoo in spectacular fashion to win the 50th edition of the Cathay SVNS at Kai Tak Stadium in April.

With the current format of the World Championship, the country with the highest cumulative points across these three tournaments claims the title.

For South Africa, it’s one down, two to go, and they have every reason to be confident after getting the three-part event off to the best possible start with a historic triumph in the Far East.

Philip Snyman’s team are currently leading the log with 20 points, with Argentina, who were defeated 35-7 by South Africa in the Final in Hong Kong, in second place on 18 points. Spain completes the top three after the first event with 16 points.

The BlitzBoks have also welcomed back a few players from injury ahead of the second leg, with Dewald Human, Ricardo Duarttee, and Gino Cupido back in the squad, and their integration shouldn’t be too tricky with all of them having played in the series.

They will face Great Britain, Kenya and Australia in Pool A.

If the BlitzBoks win this weekend’s tournament in northwestern Spain, they are that much closer to clinching the World Championship, regardless of who wins in France, granted that they finish higher up in the standings.

And given the form they are in, it’s not such a long shot.

The BlitzBoks were also crowned 2025/26 SVNS Series winners after wins in Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, and New York.

A top-of-the-podium finish at Estadio José Zorrilla will put them well on track to go back-to-back after claiming the championship crown last season.

Doing that will be a massive statement by the BlitzBoks as they will then have won the SVNS World Championship in two different formats, right after claiming this season’s series as well.

Last season’s singular world championship tournament didn’t allow for slip-ups, and the BlitzBoks had to keep their mistakes to a minimum on that specific weekend to win it. And clinical they sure were.

The current format, however, emphasises consistency, a factor Snyman underlined as crucial to their long-term goal at the start of the season.

While the extended tournament allows more room for error and more time to fix it, the BlitzBoks won’t want it to come to that.

After all, that consistency they shoot for doesn’t just apply to tournaments, but matches as well; they don’t just want to be consistent in every tournament, but in every minute they spend in the field of play.

The BlitzBoks are the only team guaranteed a spot in next season’s series thanks to winning the title in March, and while that eases some pressure off them, it also puts a target on their backs.

The other seven core spots will be determined by the three World Championship tournaments.

There is no team on the circuit that would not target a win against the BlitzBoks, and given that 12 teams – eight core teams and four qualifying teams from SVNS Division Two – will fight it out for core-team status in next season’s edition, desperation will be all around.

But, just like their fellow countrymen, the double World Cup-winning Springboks, the BlitzBoks are all too familiar with being the team to beat.

And while the BlitzBoks are champions in their own right, they still draw inspiration from their fifteens counterparts, as is evident in what Ryan Oosthuizen told the HSBC SVNS website.

“They are the guiding light, and you don’t want to be the weaklings. We want to stand on our own, and we want them to also look at us as guiding lights, you know. We want them to be proud of us and to support us.”

With that kind of inspiration, the BlitzBoks will have every bit of motivation to go back-to-back.
