Rugby Legends and TOCP

South Africans, it seems, have a great capacity for social kindness, and in this case the people being kind include famous rugby players.

Springboks Joel Stransky, John Smit, Trevor Nyakane and David von Hoesslin have banded together to help The One Cup of Pap Feeding Scheme, started by KES Old Boy Wayne Boardman, his father and his domestic worker with the intention of providing a meal for a family in need.

Boardman, little once, played lock for the Sharks and the Stormers as well as other teams and in other countries, notably Australia and Italy. Like little Boardman, their scheme has grown well beyond a single family, and on Friday, 15 May 2020, they plan feed 1 200 hungry people.

Lauren Terras of Terras Communications reports: “After the first informal settlement drop, Wayne asked his friends, greater rugby and local community if they could assist to raise awareness and reach out to their networks to raise additional funds or offer donations to grow his initiative. The response was enormous and hence has mushroomed to quite a substantial operation almost overnight.”

What started out as one cup of pap and a sachet of soup has now exploded to over two tons of pap per week in a project that aims to donate food, clothes, toys and books to the less fortunate. In addition to the pap, there are between 500 and 1000 loaves of bread, a ton of polony, soup and tinned food. The One Cup of Pap Initiative started with a budget of R250 and has grown every week to where it has fed over 6 000 people since inception. Since the beginning of May, they are averaging R80 000 a week drop (feeding approximately 2000 hungry people).

Apart from the Springboks, there are South African Hockey players, Stuart Berry and Anthea Knowles, plus Barry Leach, Steve Green, Norman Wessels, Brian de Decker, Joshua Knowles and their incredible security detail including Mitch Graaf, and Basil Vacratsas from TRSG Security. They have had the complete buy-in from the South African Police Services, most notably the Sandton Police Station.

Corporates have helped – LumoHawk Foundation, Super Meats, Irvines (mealie meal), Lyncameats, MIP Holdings Pty Ltd and Lengua Africa.
