SA Rugby to review Springbok ticket prices after fan backlash
SA Rugby has acknowledged growing concerns over Springbok Test ticket prices and says it will conduct a comprehensive review of its ticketing strategy at the end of the 2026 season.
The governing body confirmed on Monday that pricing structures would be reassessed following the inaugural Nations Championship, with SA Rugby president Mark Alexander conceding that some ticket categories require closer scrutiny.
“We take full ownership of this matter and are committed to ensuring that our ticketing structure reflects accessibility and sustainability,” Alexander said.

“Supporters’ passion and loyalty are central to our success, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to our teams. Rugby is a shared national treasure, and we have a responsibility to ensure every supporter feels part of the journey.
“At the same time, we must balance this commitment with the responsibility of making these events financially viable. It is a delicate balance, but one we are determined to manage responsibly.”
Alexander rejected suggestions that ticket prices were driven by profit, pointing out that SA Rugby recorded a financial loss in 2025.
“Our commercial strategies are designed to cover the cost of running rugby in South Africa, not to increase profits,” he said.
He added that Springbok Tests generate significant economic benefits, both directly and indirectly, while promoting South Africa on the global stage.
“Rugby is not only a sport but also a powerful driver of national pride and international recognition.
“Our objective is clear: to balance the financial sustainability of the sport with the imperative of keeping rugby accessible to all South Africans.”
Alexander confirmed that SA Rugby will review its ticketing framework ahead of the 2027 season, with any necessary changes aimed at making the pricing model more sustainable and supporter-friendly.
The Springboks conclude the July leg of the Nations Championship against Wales at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban on Saturday.
