SA stars making their mark across the URC

SPOTLIGHT: South African players are once again dominating the conversation heading into the closing rounds of the United Rugby Championship season, with stars from the Lions, Bulls, Stormers and Sharks featuring prominently across the competition’s statistical award categories.

With the final round of the regular season approaching, the URC Awards races are entering their decisive phase. Margins at the top are shrinking in some categories, widening in others, and the pressure of the closing stretch is beginning to shape the narrative.

Several leaders now look firmly in control, but elsewhere the competition remains wide open.

The Lions, in particular, have stamped their authority on the numbers this season.

Fullback Quan Horn has emerged as one of the competition’s standout attacking threats, ranking among the leading contenders for the Playmaker Award thanks to seven try assists, 17 offloads and 40 defenders beaten.

Captain Francke Horn has also enjoyed a superb campaign, contributing eight try assists while establishing himself as one of the most influential forwards in the tournament.

The Johannesburg side’s consistency is further reflected in the Ironman standings, where Quan Horn leads the entire URC for minutes played with 1,360 across 17 matches. Horn and flyhalf Chris Smith also feature among the top-minute players in the competition, underlining how heavily the Lions have relied on their core group this season.

Up front, powerhouse prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has become one of the league’s most effective tacklers, boasting a remarkable 94.48 percent tackle success rate.

The Bulls also have several players in the spotlight heading into the final round.

Wing Sebastian de Klerk has quietly become one of the URC’s most dangerous attacking weapons, ranking highly in the Playmaker Award race with seven try assists and 41 defenders beaten.

Veteran flyhalf Handré Pollard remains among the top points scorers in the competition with 80 points, while scrumhalf Embrose Papier and hooker Johann Grobbelaar both sit near the top of the try-scoring charts.

The Stormers continue to lean heavily on the brilliance of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who features among the contenders in both the Playmaker Award and Golden Boot standings. The gifted playmaker has beaten 48 defenders this season and scored 102 points, highlighting his immense influence in attack.

Meanwhile, No.8 Evan Roos leads the entire URC try-scoring race with 12 tries.

Behind him, the chase remains intense. Sean Jansen (Connacht) and Werner Kok (Ulster) are now level on 10 tries, forming the immediate chasing pack as pressure mounts heading into the final round.

The Sharks, despite not qualifying for the play-offs, also have several standout performers in the mix.

Centre André Esterhuizen ranks among the Playmaker Award contenders thanks to his offloading game and ability to beat defenders, while loose forward Vincent Tshituka has been one of the league’s true workhorses, playing 1,253 minutes this season.

With the playoffs looming, South African players are not only driving their franchises’ success but also dominating the individual metrics that define the URC’s best performers in 2025/26.
