NEWS: The Sharks have landed another big signing with confirmation that World Cup-winning prop Trevor Nyakane will trade Paris for Durban next season.

The 34-year-old Nyakane has spent the last three years in France with Racing 92. They were not interested in offering him another contract.

Nyakane attracted attention from the Bulls, one of his former teams, as well but the Sharks won the tussle.

The Sharks have brought out the big cheque books in recent weeks in a desperate attempt to turn their struggling side into a more successful one next season.

Nyakane will bring valuable experience to the youthful front row at Kings Park.

His professional career started with the Cheetahs in both Super Rugby and the Currie Cup before he moved to the Bulls in 2014.

In June 2013 he made his Test debut for the Springboks against Italy in Durban. He came on from the bench in the 73rd minute as a loosehead-prop replacement for Tendai Mtawarira.

The versatile prop, who can play on both sides of the scrum, claimed a place in the Springboks squad for the 2019 World Cup.

However, he had to withdraw through injury in the pool stage and was replaced by Thomas du Toit. South Africa went on to win the tournament, defeating England in the final.

Nyakane was named the Bulls vice-captain for the 2020 Super Rugby season and helped the Pretoria side to titles in both the Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup that season.

June 2021 saw him being named in South Africa’s 46-man squad for the British and Irish Lions Tour. He turned out for South Africa A team who managed a 17-13 victory over Warren Gatland’s charges.

After 82 caps for the Bulls over a six-year period, Nyakane made the move to France joining Racing 92 in December 2021.

His Test career went from strength to strength as he helped the Springboks conquer the World Cup in 2023.
