CONFIRMED: Shock as Swys de Bruin steps down as Springbok Women coach
SPOTLIGHT: The Springbok Women will take on the Black Ferns without their head coach, Swys de Bruin, at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Netwerk24 broke the news that De Bruin has vacated his position as head coach following a dispute with SA Rugby.
Since then, SA Rugby confirmed that he has stepped down and will also not attend the game this Saturday.
As far as Rugby365 knows, De Bruin has not been at the training since Monday.
In his absence SA Rugby enlisted the help of Junior Boks assistant coach Melusi Mthethwa, who works under head coach Kevin Foote.
This is certainly a massive shock for the women’s game in South Africa as the team prepares for one of its biggest seasons.
De Bruin guided the Springbok Women through a historic World Cup campaign in England last year, where South Africa reached the quarterfinals for the first time before being eliminated by New Zealand.
De Bruin joined the Bok Women as a performance coach in 2024 before taking up the role of head coach ahead of the 2025 World Cup.
The former Lions coach, who spoke to Rugby365 last week about the future of the women’s game, extended his contract after the 2025 World Cup and had been expected to remain in charge through to the 2029 World Cup in Australia.

Netwerk24 claims that his dispute with SA Rugby centred on win bonuses relating to the team’s tours to Africa and Fiji, which De Bruin did not personally attend.
The former Springbok assistant coach reportedly maintained that he was entitled to the bonuses despite his absence from those tours.
De Bruin is also said to have been unhappy about alleged interference during his time in charge.
According to Netwerk24’s sources, the experienced coach is now one of the targets for Paarl Boys’ High.
His son, Niel de Bruin, was a director at the school before joining Johan Ackermann at the Bulls as an assistant coach.
The other coach reportedly in talks with the school is Jake White.
