Smith's Toulon deal confirmed
One of the worst-kept secrets in South Africa and France were finally confirmed.
South African 2007 World Cup winner Juan Smith will make his comeback from a long-standing Achilles injury with French Top 14 outfit Toulon.
Smith has signed a one-year deal with the European Cup champions, Toulon.
The 32-year-old Smith, capped 69 times by the Springboks, has had to battle through a series of medical exams to seal the contract.
The flank had retired last year, following an Achilles tendon injury – suffered in February 2011 – and which necessitated surgery on more than one occasion.
However, he is attempting one last throw of the dice to prolong his career.
"The defeat by Grenoble [26-28 at the weekend] expedited our decision," Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal told Nice-Matin newspaper.
