Springbok star lifts lid on worst fear ahead of Wales clash
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx has revealed the extent of the injury he sustained in Japan, admitting he feared the worst.
Marx suffered the injury during a Japan League One semifinal clash between Kubota Spears and Saitama Wild Knights in May, sparking concerns after he was spotted with his left arm in a sling following the match.
Fortunately, the 32-year-old hooker recovered in time to start against England at Ellis Park.
The 2025 World Rugby Player of the Year delivered another outstanding performance, scoring a try and making the most tackles in the Springboks’ commanding 45-21 victory.
He was rested for the Test against Scotland and is set to return this weekend when the Springboks face Wales at Kings Park on Saturday.
“I had a small injury in my arm or in my bicep, but thankfully got the right advice from the medical staff, not only there but back home,” Marx told reporters when asked about the setback.
“It could have been worse but fortunately I caught it early enough to make sure it was manageable and thankfully I’m through that now.”
Marx heads into the clash as the fourth-most experienced player in the matchday squad, sitting behind centre partners Jesse Kriel (89 caps) and Damian de Allende (98 caps) and captain Pieter-Steph du Toit (97 caps).
However, despite his 88 appearances for the Springboks, the hooker does not take anything for granted and works hard to remain in the Bok set-up.
“It’s always an honour and a privilege to be here. I always work as hard as I can to be here, whether it’s the first one or wherever I am now.
“I’ll still keep working hard because I know what an amazing environment we have here and what an honour it is to represent the Springboks.”
The Springboks head into Saturday’s clash against Wales as overwhelming favourites after opening their season with victories over England and Scotland.
Wales, meanwhile, arrive in Durban following a 21-35 defeat to Argentina.
The last time the sides met, South Africa ran in 11 unanswered tries in a record-breaking 73-0 victory in Cardiff.
Despite that dominant result, Marx expects another stern challenge.
“Wales are a proud, tough side regardless of their previous results,” Marx said.
“They are extremely physical and well-drilled. It is going to be a massive challenge.
“When you play the same international side in a series, they always bring a great tactical plan and immense physicality.”
