The extent of Siya Kolisi's 'niggle'
The news of Siya Kolisi’s late withdrawal on the eve of the Springboks clash against the Barbarians stole the headlines on Friday morning.
The Springbok captain will miss the exhibition match at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
Jesse Kriel has been handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Kolisi, while Bulls loose forward Marco van Staden will come in at flank.
Van Staden will partner up with Vincent Tshituka and Jean-Luc du Preez in the loose trio.
According to the statement by SA Rugby, Kolisi’s withdrwawel is due to a niggle.
On Friday, Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick revealed the severity of Kolisi’s injury.
The coach stated there is no reason for concern; it’s more of a precaution.
Kolisi had trouble with the injury on Tuesday and did not train with the side on Wednesday.
“We always try to give players the best opportunity to be 100 percent on Saturday, but Siya has a stiff neck” Stick stated when asked about the late team update.
“There is no need for us to take a risk. Chances are, by the time it’s kick-off, the neck will be fine and 100 percent.
“But we don’t want to push Siya.”
The coach revealed the Springboks’ plan is to build depth and a stronger leadership group, and is excited to see Kriel in action.
“He has always been there are one of our leaders.
“I’m excited to see Jesse’s leadership skills.
“He has always been there, vocally and leading by example.
“So, for him to lead the team is great.”
