Varsity Sevens: Maties fall short

UFS-Kovsies emerged as the major winners on Day Two of the Varsity Sevens tournament at Villagers FC as they stormed to top of the log after finishing the day unbeaten.

They will be joined in the semifinals by UJ, UP-Tuks and NWU-Pukke, with the Potchefstroom side leaving it to their final match to claim the last semifinal spot.

Kovsies claimed victories over WSU, Pukke, UCT and UFH to secure a semifinal against NWU-Pukke students – who snuck into fourth place in the final match of the day.

Despite going down to Kovsies in their first match of the day, Pukke fought back with three victories from their remaining matches to knock defending champions Maties out of the competition.

UJ secured second spot which sees them going up against Gauteng rivals UP-Tuks in the other semifinal. UJ started the day like a house on fire and were on top of the log for most of the day before falling to losses at the hands of Maties and Pukke, respectively, to finish in second place on the log.

Tuks were handed a loss in their opening match at the hands of NMMU but showed their fighting spirit to record three wins which helped them to third place on the log.

In the Plate Section, defending champions Maties will be up against Cape rivals UCT-Ikeys while fellow Cape side UWC will have a tough task of overcoming NMMU in the other playoff.

WSU had to be content with ninth place overall and will be up against UFH in the playoff for ninth/tenth.
