Varsity Sevens: UJ on top
UJ have ended Day One of this year's Varsity Sevens on top of the standings after winning four out of their five games.
UJ started the day-off in emphatic fashion beating Gauteng rivals UP-Tuks, UWC and NMMU before going down 22-24 in the last play of the game to Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in what was the big upset of the day. They eventually ended on a winning note beating Kovsies 19-0.
The Maties, who are in second place with three less bonus points than UJ, started off in a similar fashion winning their first three games against Kovsies, Fort Hare and NWU-Pukke before losing surprisingly to NMMU. They too ended with a 17-12 win over rivals UCT.
Kovsies, NWU-Pukke and UP-Tuks were the best of the rest on the day as they all got three wins each. Kovsies started the day with a loss to the Maties before going on a three game winning streak with a 36-7 win over UP-Tuks being their most impressive. They ended the day with a loss to UJ.
NWU-Pukke won their first two games against NMMU and UCT and then lost the next two against Maties and UP-Tuks before finishing with a win against WSU in the day's second last game. Tuks managed wins over WSU, NWU-Pukke and UWC.
It was a disappointing day for the two other Cape teams with UWC and UCT only winning two games each.
UWC bagged wins against Fort Hare and UCT, but could not overcome any of the northern teams as they lost to UJ, Kovsies and UP-Tuks. UCT were less than impressive as they could only notch up wins against WSU and Fort Hare, while losing to both their Western Cape rivals and NWU-Pukke.
There was not much to write home about for the three Eastern Cape teams with NMMU and WSU picking up two wins, while Fort Hare lost all their games.
NMMU and WSU did cause the day's upsets though with their wins over the Maties and UJ respectively.
