VIDEO - 'It was tough': No setback, just lessons for Bok Women star
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Springbok Women lock Vainah Ubisi’s injury lay-off has allowed the rising star to do some introspection and find a new purpose in her career.
The Bulls Daisies’ second-rower will make her first international start of the year when she takes to the field on Saturday against Black Ferns XV at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
Ubisi’s journey back to the field has been anything but smooth. After making her debut in 2023, she quickly made a name for herself with her abrasive ball-carrying, solid tackling, and natural scoring ability.
The 22-year-old was a standout in South Africa’s historic 59-17 win over the Barbarians and was nominated for SA Rugby Women’s Player of the Year later that year.
However, her momentum was halted when she underwent knee surgery, putting her ambitions on hold.
Speaking to reporters from the team’s hotel this week, Ubisi reflected on the emotional toll of the past year and how the setback ultimately deepened her appreciation for the sport.
“When I got injured last year, in my mind I was worried that I wouldn’t make it back in time for the World Cup squad.
“But as time went on, I did my rehab in Stellenbosch and being alone was not easy. It was tough.
“Sometimes the team would be there, and it actually made it a little easier for me.
“I’m just grateful that I’m back and was able to return in time. I think I just have to thank the Lord.
“It wasn’t going to be easy without prayer.”

Ubisi admitted that her World Cup dream was the driving force behind her recovery.
“That was my biggest motivation – everything I did was with that goal in mind.
“Stellenbosch was a nightmare, but I pushed through.
“But yeah, I’m glad I pushed through and was able to get it done in time and be back.”

Her return comes at a critical time for the Springbok Women, who face a stern challenge against a physical and experienced Black Ferns XV pack.
“It’s not going to be an easy game. We know it’s not their first team, but we shouldn’t take that as an advantage.
“We have to give our best because they’re not going to relax.
“I think it’s just going to be a dogfight at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.”
With regular captain Cindi Booi and Danelle Lochner absent, there is a lot of pressure on Ubisi and her Bulls Daisies teammate and longtime friend Anathi Qolo in the second row.
Qolo captained the team to a successful fourth Rugby Africa Cup title in Madagascar.
“I’ve been playing with her even before I got injured.
“We play together at the Bulls Daisies – it’s always me and her at No.4 and No.5.
“So it’s not the first time we’ll be playing side by side. We understand each other and support one another.”
Assistant coach Franzel September said Ubisi’s return is a timely and welcome boost for the team.
“Quite excited for her,” September said, adding: “I think Vainah has been part of the preparations since June.
“She was in and out with the group.
“I can’t wait to see her go on Saturday.”
