VIDEO: Slap on the wrist for Cape club thug

Cape Town club thug's cheap shot

Western Cape club rugby has the unwanted reputation as a breeding ground for thugs. Here is evidence why!

This thug was slapped on the wrist – a three-week ban – for his cheap shot at an opponent, while running onto the field.

The player, from the St Georges club in the Strand – about 30 minutes’ drive south of Cape Town – attacked an opponent, from Brackenfell, while they were running onto the field.

The Brackenfell player was part of a guard of honour that was formed for the players of the two clubs’ first teams to run through onto the field.

Thuggery in club rugby in the Western Cape is not unusual and it is not unheard of that knives or firearms are produced – especially in some of the lower leagues.

This match was in the Super League A-section – the main competition in the Cape Town region.

With the kind of lenient sentences, like this, handed out, it is obviously not a deterrent.
