VIDEO: Springboks tap into virtual reality ahead of Baabaas
In an era of rapid technological innovation, it comes as little surprise that the Springboks have taken their preparation to the next level by incorporating virtual reality (VR) into their training environment.
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus recently sent the rugby fraternity into a frenzy after sharing footage of himself and rising star Luan Giliomee testing a VR headset at the team’s hotel in Johannesburg.
In the clips, Erasmus and Giliomee can be seen putting their skills to the test in a virtual setting.

While the technology may appear futuristic, VR is far from new. It has long been used in fields such as education and healthcare and has become an increasingly valuable tool in elite sport.
Athletes across soccer, basketball and Formula 1 have embraced VR in recent years, using it to sharpen decision-making, improve reaction times and gain a competitive edge. Coaches have recognised that the technology offers something traditional training methods cannot: the opportunity to recreate match-like situations without the physical demands of on-field sessions.
From tactical awareness and skill development to rehabilitation and mental preparation, VR is transforming the way teams prepare for competition.
The Springboks have built a reputation for embracing innovation, and their latest venture into virtual reality suggests they are once again exploring every possible avenue in pursuit of marginal gains.
The Springboks will take to the field this weekend against Barbarians, before SA ‘A’ will take on Zimbabwe.
