VIDEO: Star trio to miss Bok Women versus Black Ferns XV
SPOTLIGHT: The Springbok Women are hard at work finding a more settled team as they seek to overcome a strong Black Ferns XV side this Saturday at Athlone Stadium.
Following two defeats (20-50 and 5-33) to Canada, the Springbok Women assembled in Cape Town for their final two warm-up match against Black Ferns XV before departing for the World Cup in England next month.
The team had their first training session on Monday at the University of Cape Town Rugby Fields, and after a thorough review, Springbok Women assistant coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt stated that there were some positives from the matches against Canada.
However, she admitted there are still a few areas they need to iron out as the Black Ferns XV looms.

“We have dissected the Canada games, and we’ve seen some good moments.
“I know our transitional play could be better.
“Heading into the match against Black Ferns XV, we want to transition better, play a more attacking brand of rugby, and also finish well.
“We also want to improve at the breakdown.”
She revealed that, similar to the Canada series, the result won’t be the main focus. Instead, they aim to finalise various combinations, especially the halfback pairing.
“We are going to play around with combinations. We want to test them for the final time before heading into the World Cup, where we hope to be a more settled team.
“It’s not about the results, but we definitely want to give our best showing and take some positives heading into the World Cup.”
Having played against New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup, the former Springbok international knows all too well the talent the country possessed, even the XV side.
“The Black Ferns XV come with a special skill set, which is unmatched.
“They play from all over the park. They have a solid set-piece as well, so we’re in for quite a good game.
“There are quite a few capped Black Ferns players and sevens stars, so we’re preparing for a proper physical encounter.
“We watched their previous game [ against the Black Ferns], and it was a good showing from them, so we know what to expect.”
The coach stated that second row Vainah Ubisi has slotted in nicely since her long-awaited return from a knee injury.
The 18-capped Springbok is set to make her first appearance for the national team since 2023.
“She is beaming with excitement. Just to be back on the park – she’s been waiting a long time for this and has been doing well.
“It’s good to see her back in form, and she will be available for Saturday.”
Meanwhile, lock Danelle Lochner, wing Ayanda Malinga, and utility back Byrhandré Dolf will miss the Black Ferns XV showdown.
Lochner sustained a knock to the nose, while Malinga and Dolf are struggling with shoulder injuries.
Fortunately for the Springbok Women, the trio will be available for the World Cup selection.
South Africa will take on Brazil, France and Italy in the pool matches at the World Cup.
