Watson, along with Nadia Gerwel, Andrea Wessels and Mandisa Mkaza have all been released on R2000 bail after the Hawks arrested the quartet on the morning of Friday, March 31.

According to The Herald, State advocate Tjaart van Zyl said the accused face 43 counts of fraud and money laundering, totalling R12-million for "circumventing the procurement process between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, National Treasury and Access Management".

The state said it was not opposed to bail because the accused have no previous convictions and all have fixed addresses.

The postponement allows for further investigation and for the arrest of an outstanding accused – Stephen Pretorius, who is believed to be in Cape Town.

After years of resisting hostile takeovers, Cheeky Watson finally decided to walk away from the Eastern Province Kings earlier this month.

Watson's decision to resign as President of the bankrupt Eastern Province Rugby Union came just days after the South African Rugby Union revealed administration of the EPRU is set to be returned to local hands – following a series of ground-breaking decisions at a special general meeting in Port Elizabeth.
