World Rugby ready to throw the book at Wiese
UPDATE: South African loose forward Jasper Wiese will face the full might of the World Rugby law.
Jasper Wiese, who was red-carded in the Springboks’ 45-0 whitewash of Italy in Port Elizabeth at the weekend, has been told to appear before a disciplinary hearing.
“World Rugby can confirm that the foul play review committee has decided to refer the matter involving Jasper Wiese to a disciplinary committee for a full disciplinary hearing,” the governing body said.
Wiese’s hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 15.
While most players have the opportunity to plead guilty and receive a reduced sentence, it appears Wiese’s spotty disciplinary record will count against the season Bok.
The 29-year-old back row forward has received more than his fair share of suspensions for dangerous play, including high tackles and reckless clear-outs, with cards of one hue or another a recurring theme at both club and international level.

Per the remit of the new expedited off-field sanction process trial operational in the July internationals, sanctions are proposed in line with Appendix 1 of Regulation 17.
The foul play review committee meets without the attendance of the player or their representatives, or World Rugby.
However, written submissions may be provided by the player to the foul play review committee for consideration.
However, in Wiese’s case, it was sent straight to a full hearing, an indication of the severity of the charges against him.
Bok No.8, Wiese, was shown a red card in the 20th minute of the match for a headbutt.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus came out in support of Wiese, stating that he is not a malicious player by nature but will wait and see what the outcome of his disciplinary hearing will be.
“Jasper [Wiese] will have an opinion on what happened and why it got to the point that it happened,” Erasmus said in his post-match debrief.
“Jasper must handle that now with our support as best as he can.
“He’s just so committed and passionate about the team, and then something like that happens.”
* Meanwhile, two other players have been giver their sentences by the foul play review committee.
The foul play review committee was chaired by Roddy Dunlop (Scotland), joined by former players Jamie Corsi (Wales) and Olly Kohn (Wales).
Scotland’s Darcy Graham was issued with a red card as a result of two yellow cards in Scotland’s match against Fiji.
The foul play review committee issued a warning to Graham after determining that sending off would be sufficient, noting that both of the yellow cards were for technical offences.
The player has accepted the sanction and is free to play with immediate effect.
Romania’s Ionut Alexandru Harasim was cited for a breach of Law 9.11 (reckless or dangerous actions) following Romania’s match against Uruguay.
The foul play review committee has confirmed a three-match suspension (reduced to two on successful completion of the coaching intervention programme) to the player.
The Player accepted that his actions were reckless though not deliberate and that the citing was warranted.
Harasim is therefore suspended for the following matches:
Argentina XV v Romania (international) – 18 July 2025
CS Rapid v CSM Stiinta Baia Mare (national) – 16 August 2025
CSM Stiinta Baia Mare v CS Dinamo Bucuresti (national) – 23 August 2025* – he will be free to play in this match after his successful completion of the World Rugby coaching intervention programme.
