Wales Rugby News
The Wales national rugby union team is one of the most formidable sides in the northern hemisphere. They first appeared on the international stage in 1881, when they played their first test against England.
The Wales rugby team competes in the annual Six Nations Championship. They are the second-most decorated team in Championship history, with 28 outright wins and 12 Grand Slams. The Welsh side is also a strong contender in the Rugby World Cup; they finished third in 1987 and reached the semi-finals in both 2011 and 2019.
Welsh Rugby Team Versus South Africa
The Wales rugby team first played against South Africa in 1906, when the Springboks won 11-0. This pattern continued until their 13th encounter in 1999, when the Welsh squad secured their first victory over South Africa.
The two teams have faced each other many times since, and South Africa have continually enjoyed long winning streaks. Their most impressive spanned for 16 successive matches between 2000 and 2014. However, Wales did win four consecutive matches between 2016 and 2018.
Added to this, South Africa have won all of the matches between the two teams at the Rugby World Cup. Here, Wales have lost to South Africa three times: 2011 (pool-stage), 2015 (quarter-final) and 2019 (semi-final).
