Dragons underline case for survival as WRU eyes overhaul of regional structure
Dragons RFC have issued a defiant statement as the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) continues its consultation on the future structure of the professional game.
“When we took over the Dragons in 2023 our ambition was clear, we wanted to build a club that could thrive both on and off the field,” the club said in a statement.
“That commitment has not changed… Our message will be simple and consistent, elite rugby must remain in Gwent and Dragons RFC has every reason to continue proudly in its current form.”
The consultation period, running through August and September, is looking at potential cost-cutting measures and forms part of a complete reform of professional rugby in Wales.

It will determine whether the current model of four equally funded regions remains viable, or if the number should be reduced to three or even two.
The Dragons insist they have made “real progress” since shifting back to private ownership in 2023, claiming financial stability and improved commercial partnerships.
“We have great fans, dedicated staff and players, and fantastic partners. As custodians of Dragons RFC, we’ll continue to represent the interests of our entire rugby community.”
The WRU consultation process is expected to continue through September, after which firm proposals will be tabled.
