The legend of 300

Sunday was a special day to be a South African!

South African golfing legend Ernie Els won the Open by one stroke from Adam Scott, after the Australian suffered an extraordinary late collapse on an incident-packed final day.

Els captured his fourth major title after the 1994 and 1997 US Opens and the 2002 British Open by navigating brisk winds and avoiding pesky pot bunkers down the stretch, going four-under par on the back nine to capture the Claret Jug.

And it was by no means the only South African triumph on British soil.

SA batsman Hashim Amla set a South African Test record with his innings of 311 not out on the fourth day of the first Test against England at the Oval on Sunday.

In the process he broke the previous South African individual Test innings record of teammate AB de Villiers, who made 278 not out against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in November 2010.

Amla's triple century and four strikes by South Africa's bowlers had England reeling.

England were 102 for four at the close, needing another 150 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
