Law Discussion: How can play go on?

This is our silly question for this week to see how we get on with the laws of the game. Last week’s was taken from a real match; this one is entirely hypothetical.

The Red Devils play the Golden Angels.

There are four minutes to go and the Red Devils are leading 11-10 and the Golden Angels’ fullback kicks the ball a long way downfield. When he kicks the ball all the other angels, cherubim and seraphim, are well in front of him. Having kicked the fullback falls to the ground with something so catastrophic that he cannot get to his feet – heart attack, broken leg, cramp all over – something like that.

The Red Devils’ fullback catches the ball, looks up and sees the Golden Angel lying on the ground with medics rushing to his aid.

Aware of the score and of the time left, the Red Devil fullback puts the ball on the ground and sits on it – playing down the clock by not playing.
