New Zealand played Samoa in New Plymouth and won 101-14. It was a much weakened Samoan team and the match was played under the experimental law variations that apply only to the Tri-Nations. It was match practice for the All Blacks in their preparation for the match with Australia in Brisbane on 13 September.
