Deon in Shaun's Place

Deon van Blommestein will be flying to Dublin tomorrow to act as TMO in the crunch match between Ireland and England. He takes the place of Shaun Veldsman who is in hospital and who has great news.

Veldsman suffered a punctured lung when stabbed by criminals who tried to take his bakkie when he was travelling home along the N2.

Veldsman, who is in the Mediclinic in Stellenbosch also has good news. The drain has been removed from his lung, the doctor is pleased with his progress and he will be going home tomorrow, to complete a journey he started on Saturday.

Deon van Blommestein, the son of Paul who was a top referee in his day, ended his refereeing career as one of South Africa's top referees and is now a TMO and an assessor.

Van Blommestein has been the TMO in Super Rugby and Currie Cup matches and this is his third year as a TMO in Test matches. Last year he was the TMO for two Tests in Argentina when the Pumas played Australia and New Zealand and was the TMO when Scotland played Argentina.
