EPCR: Referee appointments for Rounds Three and Four
NEWS: The Champions Cup and Challenge Cup return this weekend, with Round Three taking place from Friday, January 9 to Sunday, January 11 January.
EPCR confirmed the teams of match officials who will take charge of the 42 Round Three and Four matches.
Once again, the officials were selected, based on performance, by a committee of selectors chaired by EPCR’s Head of Match Officials, Tony Spreadbury.
On the appointments, Spreadbury commented: “We are delighted with the high standards of officiating in the opening two rounds, with consistent application of guidance and laws and a commitment to safety, speed and space.
“The performances are reflected in the appointments for Rounds 3 and 4, and we look forward to seeing further consistency in the closing pool matches.”
France’s Luc Ramos and Ireland’s Eogan Cross get the action underway on Friday as the Champions Cup restarts with two Pool Two matches: Edinburgh v Gloucester, and Castres Olympique hosting Bath at Stade Pierre Fabre.
Pierre Brousset (France) gets Saturday’s Champions Cup action underway in South Africa as Pool Four’s Bulls host Bristol Bears. Sunday’s replay of the 2025 Champions Cup Final sees Italy’s Gianluca Gnecchi the man in the middle as Pool Three’s top two clash with Northampton Saints travelling to Union Bordeaux Bègles.
The EPCR Challenge Cup gets back underway on Saturday, 10 January, as Stade Français Paris host Exeter Chiefs in a Pool Three top-of-table clash, and Pool One’s bottom two, US Montauban and Black Lion, face each other.
Meanwhile, unbeaten Newcastle, sitting second in Pool Two, will welcome third-placed Union Sportive Arlequins Perpignanais. Craig Evans (Wales), Filippo Russo (Italy) and Peter Martin (Ireland) take charge of those matches, respectively.

Ten of the referees will also be taking charge of Six Nations matches following the conclusion of the pool stage, including Hollie Davidson (Scotland), who becomes the first woman to referee a Men’s Six Nations match.
The current standings across the pools demonstrate that competition is as tight as ever for qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, and most importantly, to secure that all-important home advantage as the knockout stages progress.
