Most bizarre TMO call

The Sydney prop who scored Rugby Union's first ever 'own try' says he's still a bit stunned by the refereeing howler that's gone viral around the world.

But Mitch Lewis can at least see one upside.

"I will be a walking, talking trivia question for a long time I guess," Lewis told the Daily Telegraph.

The bizarre scene unfolded in the opening quarter of the National Rugby Championship clash between the North Harbour Rays and the Sydney Stars on Thursday at Leichhardt Oval.

The Stars were attacking the Rays' line when Lewis ripped the ball from Sydney hooker James Willan near the line, and placed it back over his own line.

Referee Ian Smith referred it to TMO Michael Blair to see if Willan had scored.

Replays made it clear Lewis had grounded it, behind his own line, but a try was awarded anyway.
