Nigel Goes Clubbing

On Sunday, Owens of West Wales was named Referee of the Year at World Rugby's annual awards.

This coming weekend he is off to referee at the Gowerton club and they are excited at the prospect.

Gowerton is west of Swansea. It's rugby club is 130 years old and played in the Welsh Rugby Union's Division Two West.

This Saturday Gowerton are to play another West Walian club, Crymych RFC, of the Welsh Rugby Union's Division One West. The club, in a small Pembrokeshire village, is about a century younger than Gowerton.

The two will meet in a SSE SWALEC League Division One West match at the Victoria Road ground in Gowerton with the most famous living West Walian Nigel Owens to referee. He is such a famous figure in West Wales that he is going to be very much an attraction for spectators on Saturday.

It may just be that the language on the field for this match may be Welsh.

Richard Jenkins, the Gowerton secretary, said: "We're over the moon to discover that Nigel Owens will be refereeing our match against Crymych on Saturday fresh from his exciting Twickenham exploits in this year's Rugby World Cup.

"Nigel is a true professional and it will be a pleasure to welcome him to Victoria Road. With his world-class experience and swift tongue I'm sure he'll manage to keep the seniors in check on the pitch.

"It will be a first for us to have Nigel ref a match, although he has joined us for a dinner before. We will be marking his visit after the match and look forward to a celebratory occasion following what will hopefully be a home win for the club too!"

And he will referee to the best of his ability.
