Referees to 15 November 2015
It is the 20th such club competition whose winner last year was Toulon whose foreign legion will start this year's campaign against Bath in Toulon.
It will certainly send referees and their helpers whizzing around Europe.
It is a European club championship. Toulon have 11 different nationalities in their squad, Bath seven.
The Cup of Nations is the third such competition, the first played outside the United Arab Emirates. The host venue this time is the Hong Kong Football Club. There are three rounds, ending on 21 November 2015.
There is also the British and Irish Cup starts this week, which gives teams just below those in European competition something to play for.
In Wales the Foster's Challenge Cup is being brought into being – also to give clubs more rugby and the possibility of silverware.
The Australian Barbarians are on tour in New Zealand and play two matches against the Heartland XV. One of those matches will be refereed by Jamie Nutbrown, the 34-year-old former Super Rugby scrumhalf.
Again the French hold out the hand of hospitality to a visiting referee, this time Dr Lloyd Linton of Scotland who is refereeing a Pro D2 match.
