Wellington Referees, Day 1
Craig Joubert began his new job this month as the referee talent development coach for World Rugby. He has enormous experience for the job. He became known to the refereeing world on the Sevens circuit where he refereed 12 finals, including the World Cup Sevens Final. In Fifteens he refereed 54 Tests including a World Cup Final – apart from many other achievements. He will no longer referee Fifteens but his post does not preclude him from refereeing Sevens, as he will be doing this weekend.
Under the experienced guidance of Paddy O'Brien the referees at the tournament are: James Doleman (New Zealand), Nori Hashimoto (Japan), Craig Joubert (South Africa), Richard Kelly (New Zealand), Damon Murphy (Australia), Rasta Rasivhenge (South Africa), Matt Rodden (Hong Kong), Tevita Rokovereni (Fiji), Kaveni Talemaivavalagi (Fiji), Jordan Way (Australia).
Apart from the two South Africans, the referees are from Pacific nations, five countries.
The referees for Day 2, the knock-out matches, will be appointed after Day 1 when the matches are known.
