Can NWU handle Tuks' all-court game?

STAT ATTACK: Tuks will go into the Varsity Cup Final against the NWU Eagles with a slight tactical advantage.

The Varsity Cup will reach a climax on Monday evening, when Tuks host the NWU Eagles in Pretoria.

Tuks could become the most successful team in Varsity Cup history if they win the decider.

As things stand, Tuks and Maties have won five titles apiece since the competition’s inception in 2008.

Meanwhile, the NWU Eagles will be gunning for their first title since 2023.

While both teams have featured prominently across a tournament that has prioritised attack, it remains to be seen whether Monday’s Final will be played in the same “you score, I score” spirit.

With both sides boasting an array of set-piece, kicking and defensive strengths, the contest in Pretoria may be a lot cagier than most expect.

HOME ADVANTAGE V FORM

Speak to the respective Varsity Cup coaches, and they will tell you how significant home advantage has been over the course of this year’s competition.

Tuks Stadium at the University of Pretoria has become a fortress, while many visiting players have struggled to cope with the hostile reception at the Fanie du Toit Sport Grounds at NWU.

Neither Tuks nor the Eagles have lost a home game this season.

Tuks will enjoy home advantage this Monday, but may recall what transpired when these teams last met during the league phase.

The Eagles claimed a 30-22 win in Potchefstroom – and consigned Tuks to their one and only loss of the regular season.

For that reason, the Eagles will believe that victory is possible this Monday.

MOST BALANCED TEAMS ON SHOW

Tuks and the Eagles have certainly contributed to the Varsity Cup’s attacking product this season, having averaged the most tries and points scored.

And yet, when one digs a bit deeper into the numbers, it becomes clear why they are in the Final and why others like UCT and the Shimlas are not.

Tuks have conceded the fewest tries on average (3.4), followed by Maties (3.8) and the Eagles (4.4).

Every other side in the eight-team competition has leaked five tries or more per match.

Furthermore, Tuks have conceded the fewest points on average (24) and have leaked 30 on just two occasions this season.

The average scoreline in the five games staged in Pretoria this season reads 46-23 in Tuks’ favour.

ALL-COURT THREAT

Tuks have one of the strongest packs in varsity rugby, and the means to score via the rolling maul.

That said, the stats show how they have varied their attacking approach across the 2026 season.

The Varsity Cup differentiates between “normal tries” and “point of origin tries (POR)” in the match centre on their website.

As per the unique laws of this tournament, normal tries are worth five points, while tries that originate in the scoring team’s half are worth seven.

When one focuses on the try-scoring stats – and essentially where the tries have originated – some interesting patterns emerge.

It won’t surprise anyone to learn that UCT – who pride themselves on an “attack-from-anywhere” mentality – recorded the greatest percentage of POR tries in 2026 (51 percent).

One might expect other expansive teams like Shimlas and the Eagles to feature at the top of this list, but neither are in the top three.

Tuks and UJ have been among the greatest long-range threats in 2026, with Tuks scoring a whopping 30 percent of their tries from within their own half.

At the same time, Tuks have averaged 4.4 “normal tries” each game – and only the Eagles (5.4) have averaged more in this category.

Whereas some can be accused of persisting with a “you score, I score” approach, Tuks and the Eagles have maintained a high standard on both sides of the ball.

Both have scored a lot of tries while limiting the opposition at the other end of the park, particularly with regards to POR tries.

Tuks lead the way in this defensive category – just 18 percent of the total tries conceded have been POR scores – followed by the Eagles (20 percent).

As those numbers suggest, an opponent is more likely to score against Tuks and the Eagles from closer range than from deep within their own territory.

And yet, it’s worth remembering that the Tuks are among the tournament leaders in both categories, for most POR tries scored and fewest conceded.

What could this mean for the Final on Monday?

Tuks will present an all-court threat.

While the Eagles’ defence has been good to date, they would do well to repel Tuks at the coalface and to prevent the hosts from counter-attacking from deep.

The game is unlikely to witness an aggregate score in excess of 100 points, as was the case when the Eagles outlasted UCT 56-53 in Potch two weeks ago, or a dozen POR tries.

But don’t be surprised if Tuks produce a long-range effort or two to clinch the contest and the trophy.
