Team of the Week: Three X three

It was an important weekend, with teams making their moves before the break and numerous national teams being named for the June Tests.

The result is an interesting mix in our famous weekly selection – with three teams each having three representatives in our starting XV.

The Highlanders, Cheetahs and Bulls all have three players in our starting XV, with the reds and Waratahs two each – while the Crusaders and Brumbies (one each) make up the numbers.

The Brumbies and Bulls dominate our back-up squad, with four each from those two teams 'bubbling under'. The Stormers, Highlanders (two each), Waratahs, Hurricanes and Cheetahs (one each) make up the rest.

Three players return from last week – fullback Ben Smith (Highlanders), wing Willie le Roux (Cheetahs), who was on the left last week and on the right this week, and flank Heinrich Brüssow (Cheetahs).

Team of the Week – Round 16:

15 – Ben Smith (Highlanders):

There is a good reason why he is in the current All Black squad – it was there for all to see at the weekend.

Bubbling under: Israel Folau (Waratahs)

14 – Willie le Roux (Cheetahs):

He didn't just force the Springbok door open, he kicked it down.

Bubbling under: Alapati Leiua (Hurricanes)

13 – JJ Engelbrecht (Bulls):

Some pundits still see him as a better wing, but with every game in the midfield he grows in stature.

Bubbling under: Jean de Villiers (Stormers)

12 – Jan Serfontein (Bulls):

His meteoric rise from an age-group star to a senior Springbok squad member will not come as a surprise to those who have followed this young man since his school days.

Bubbling under: Christian Lealiifano (Brumbies)

11 – Hosea Gear (Highlanders):

He still hasn't lost his ability to trouble defences with ball in hand. A pity his team has gone through such a slump this season.

Bubbling under: Bryan Habana (Stormers)

10 – Dan Carter (Crusaders):

He again showed his value to the Crusaders and if his hand injury rules him out of the Tests against France New Zealand will be the poorer for it.

Bubbling under: Morné Steyn (Bulls)

9 – Will Genia (Reds):

He kept the Reds on track and his calm demeanour eventually rubbed off on Quade Cooper, who found some form late in the win over a tricky Rebels outfit.

Bubbling under: Nick White (Brumbies)

8 – Ben Mowen (Brumbies):

Played a truly captain's innings.

Bubbling under: Pierre Spies (Bulls)

7 – Michael Hooper (Waratahs):

Was outstanding in a losing cause – a game that could so easily have gone the other way.

Bubbling under: John Hardie (Highlanders)

6 – Heinrich Brüssow (Cheetahs):

He keeps sending reminders to the Springbok coach that he can add value to the national team.

Bubbling under: Colby Fainga'a (Brumbies)

5 – James Horwill (Reds):

The inspirational leader was again the backbone in the forward pack that edged the Rebels.

Bubbling under: Juandré Kruger (Bulls)

4 – Brad Thorn (Highlanders):

The old man finally produced the kind of performance his legions of fans had been hoping he will come up with for the Highlanders this year.

Bubbling under: Flip van der Merwe (Bulls)

3 – Lourens Adriaanse (Cheetahs):

The most unexpected of the Bok call-ups this weekend, but his timing in producing such a classy performance could not have been better.

Bubbling under: Ben Alexander (Brumbies)

2 – Chiliboy Ralepelle (Bulls):

His workrate is simply phenomenal and his physical presence against the Cheetahs was invaluable.

Bubbling under: Andrew Hore (Highlanders)

1 – Benn Robinson (Waratahs):

He is often seen as more of a scrummager, but sometimes his real value is outside the set pieces.

Bubbling under: Coenie Oosthuizen (Cheetahs)
