Stormers scalp could save Bulls' season
OPINION: The Bulls find themselves between a rock and a hard place following the dismissal of assistant coaches Andries Bekker and Chris Rossouw.
It remains unclear whether Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann will be allowed to appoint a new line-out and backline coach following the departures of Bekker and Rossouw, and who they might be.
In the meantime, the South African franchises will enjoy a week off following the Round Seven United Rugby Championship action, with the Round Eight local derbies shifted to February and March 2026.
The article continues below…
For the Bulls, this is the perfect opportunity to reset, refocus and plot their plan to end their losing streak and, in the same breath, end their arch-rival Stormers’ unbeaten run in the tournament in Cape Town on January 3.
A win against the tournament leaders would not only be morale-boosting, but it would make a statement that the Pretoria-based outfit is a much better team when their players and coaches are all on the same page.
The Bulls are still in a good space in the URC (eighth place) despite back-to-back defeats to the Lions and Sharks.
They should shift their focus fully to the URC and leave the Champions Cup as an afterthought, or perhaps gun for a spot in the Challenge Cup as they did last season.
A defeat in Cape Town would make life very difficult going forward, facing a tricky Edinburgh outfit away before returning to South Africa for an away match against an improving Lions outfit at Ellis Park on January 31.
Following a month-long break, the Bulls face local opposition in the form of the Sharks and Stormers at Loftus Versfeld on consecutive weekends, which are always brutal, and they’re currently 0/2 against local opposition this season.
But back to the first point: Ackermann’s men need to win in Cape Town; otherwise, the avalanche could come tumbling down and result in a forgettable season for a team that contested three of the competition’s last four Finals.
