Malcolm Marx Biography

The 25-year-old Malcolm Marx made his Springbok debut against New Zealand in Christchurch in September 2016 and went on to become a key member of the victorious World Cup campaign in Japan in 2019.

The former Junior Springbok star has established himself as one of the Springboks’ top players and was named SA Rugby Player of the Year for 2017. His strong ball carrying abilities and incredible turnover exploits saw Malcolm Marx nominated for the 2018 World Rugby Player of the Year Award.

Everyone knew that Malcolm Marx would go on to achieve big things in rugby after seeing his fantastic performances at King Edward VII School. It is here at KES that the combination of three former Lions players, Malcolm Marx, Dylan Smith and Kyle Brink  - coined the Three Musketeers - was formed. The threesome have been friends, and at one stage teammates, ever since.

Born in Germiston on 13 July 1994, Marx quickly made his way up the age group ranks in Lions junior rugby and eventually made his Lions Super Rugby debut in 2014 after playing for South Africa Schools in 2012.

After a stellar 2017 for the Lions, Malcolm Marx picked up a number of awards for the Lions including Super Rugby Player of the Year, Supporters Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and Most Valued Player of the Year. Marx continued this form into the 2018 Super Rugby season, finishing the competition as the Lions' top try-scorer of the year.

He was also voted SA Rugby Player of the Year, SA Rugby Young Player of the Year and South African Super Rugby Player of the Tournament.

After the World Cup final in Yokohama, Malcolm Marx opted not to return for the start of the 2020 Super Rugby season,  thus becoming one of five people who left the Emirates Lions after South African rugby introduced the industry salary plan (ISP) to deal with the repercussions of Covid-19. In August 2020, he signed with the Kubota Spears.

Malcolm Marx is an agile hooker that is always hungry for the ball and an incredible asset for any team he plays for.
