Craven Week Results - Day One

Namibia and Border Country Districts kicked off the 2010 Craven Week and the brown-burnt field at North West Stadium in Welkom. The Namibians were too fast, too strong, too skilled for the willing boys from the Eastern Cape.

In the second match, Boland scored wonderful tries, mostly from long range as they were much too fast from the boys from up north. They played into the wind in the first half and led 12-6 at the break.

The third match, between Eastern Province and the Blue Bulls was a thriller. Eastern Province played with the wind in the first half and led 16-0 at the break. The Blue Bulls played with the wind and their big forwards in the second half and late in the half led 17-16. Then Franz Botha goaled a penalty in the wind. Not done the Blue Bulls pounded back and were hammering at the Eastern Province line when a tackle was declared unplayable and the final whistle went.

Western Province played into the wind in the first half and led 13-3 at the break after some great goal-kicking by Gavin Hauptfleisch and a convincing dummy and a try by tall flank Sikumbuzo Notshe. The only score in the second half was from a bit of line-out cleverness after a penalty.

The last match of the day was the strangest as fortunes fluctuated and the end was so desperate. The Eastern Province Country Districts led 25-0 at one stage in the first half and were playing with great confidence. Then the Griffons go two quick tries before the break and confidence seemed to seek out of the Eastern Cape side while it surged in the Northern Free Staters. 25-15 became 25-21 and then 28-25 as huge Juan-Pierre Botes powered over from close. At the end the Eastern Province side was close to scoring but the Griffons protected the treasure of their lead.
