Craven Week Results - Day Two
After the thrills of Day One, the Craven Week’s Day Two kicked off in Welkom with Griqualand West Country Districts and Zimbabwe running at each other.
Griquas Country Districts is in effect the old North West Cape with most of the players from Hoërskool Duineveld in Upington. They have the same colours and badge as North West Cape had when it was allowed to exist.
Griquas Country Districts were leading 13-5 till just before half-time when the Zimbabweans, playing with the wind, scored a try. The big Zimbabwe pack gave their opponents a torrid time and enabled scrumhalf Jaco Pieters to cause all sorts of problems for his opposite number.
Early in the second half a penalty – amongst a relentless flow of penalties in the match – put the Zimbabweans ahead but then Griquas Country Districts took over with enterprising running and recovered the lead when right wing Johan Myburgh scored a brilliant try before running round under the posts.
The second match was a sort of David-vs-Goliath clash and at one stage it looked as of the much smaller Griquas side was going to do a David, not with slingshots but with the boot of small flyhalf Kobus du Plessis who had the wind to help him. (Griquas had the shortest player at Craven Week in scrumhalf Darryl van Eck, the Valke the tallest in lock Ruan Botha!)
In these early moments it looked as if Griquas, with superior technique, would beat the bigger Valke but gradually the power of the East Randers told. In fact, the Valke looked best when they played with their backs and loose forwards who looked sharp.
Kobus du Plessis’s boot gave his side a 9-0 lead but then the Valke ran in two tries close to the posts and they led 14-9 at half-time. The Valke stretched their lead to 17-14 and then Griquas came darting back. Valke lost a player to the sin bin and eighthman Herman van Niekerk scored from close quarters to put Griquas just a point behind. But then Griquas shed a player and big Wiehan Hay intercepted and scored under the crossbar.
The Valke led 24-16 and then, into the strong wind, Griquas came back. Kobus du Plessis kicked a penalty and then they battered at the Valke line till tall Herman Groenewald barged over and Kobus du Plessis converted with just under two minutes to play.
It was always going to be uphill for the Eaglets against the huge men from Mpumalanga, and it was as they struggled for possession as the Pumas took their line-outs and even their scrums and dominated the breakdown. The Pumas should have won by more had it not been for handling errors and errors of judgement. Outweighed and outpowered the Eaglets suffered a further handicap with two men in the sin bin during the match. But they were brave, none more so than lively scrumhalf Percy Williams, and after the whistle they attacked the Pumas line and strong Ruan Snyman scored the try to end the match.
KwaZulu Natal started the fourth match into the wind but built up a healthy 16-0 lead from a try by sinuous Mbembe Payi and excellent kicking by Duncan Campbell. Then after the half-time siren Pieter Bornman went over in the right corner for the Leopards to make the score 16-7 at the break. In the second half each side scored a try. Patrick Howard, the most impressive three-quarter in the field, scored a try after the final siren when he charged down a chip kick, gathered and scored.
