Stars of the Craven Week

By Jon Cardinelli
Sunday 13 Jul 2025
THABISO SIMELANE Craven Week 2025

SPOTLIGHT: Rugby365 highlights the most prolific performers at the Under-18 Craven Week tournament at Hoerskool Middelburg.

THABISO SIMELANE (BULLS)

The Blue Bulls lost to the Golden Lions and Free State before thrashing Eastern Province 76-24 in the final round of the tournament.

St Albans outside back Thabiso Simelane (pictured above) finished as the tournament’s leading try-scorer (six), while Affies flyhalf Ruben Groenewald was among the top point-scorers (34).

DARIUS ERWEE (FREE STATE)

Free State lost 34-35 to SWD in the first round, before beating the Bulls 52-33 in their second fixture.

Darius Erwee was one of Free State’s most consistent players, and finished the competition at the top of the point-scorers list (43). The Grey College flyhalf scored 14 points in the third game against the Sharks on Saturday.

Centre Ethan Adams proved a handful for defenders, while yet another Grey player in Lamla Mgedezi scored five tries over the course of the week.

JACOBUS DE VILLIERS (SWD)

SWD made a statement by beating Free State and the Lions – scoring 54 points against the latter side.

No.8 Jacobus de Villiers led the Eagles’ forward charge, while his Oakdale teammate Christiaan Vorster was among the tournament’s leading try-scorers (three).

JOSH NEILL (WP)

Western Province won all three of their matches at the recent tournament, including the unofficial final against South Western Districts (27-21).

Captain Josh Neill (Rondebosch) scored three tries for his side over the course of the competition, while Paarl Gym centre Markus Muller and No.8 Quintin Potgieter, Paarl Boys prop Jordan Jooste and Stellenberg flyhalf Ethan van Biljon (35 points) were among those who impressed.

ZEKHETELO SIYAYA (SHARKS)

The Sharks started the tournament with a 41-10 win over EP, before going on to lose 13-45 to WP in the second round.

While the KwaZulu-Natalians went down to Free State on Saturday, Westville fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya carried his form through to the final fixture, scoring one of his team’s two tries.

SA SCHOOLS SHOWDOWN

Unsurprisingly, most of the players above have been selected for either the SA Schools or SA Schools ‘A’ teams, who will face off in a fixture in Middelburg on 17 July.
