SWD too strong for willing Zimbabwe

South Western Districts picked up their first win of the week – beating Zimbabwe 21-3 in Day Four action from the 2010 Craven Week in Welkom.

The willing Zimbabweans fought hard, but they were unable to prevent the Men from George from running in three tries – one in the first half and two in the second.

SWD led 11-0 at half-time, through the boot of Hendri Rust (including one long-range penalty) and a try by livewire scrumhalf Percy Williams who dived in at the corner after some good interplay between his team’s forwards and backs in the build-up.

The SWD back three combined well early in the second half to beat a total of five would-be tacklers, allowing winger Charlton Afrika to touch down under the poles, the move starting from a scrum. Rust, as he did in the first half, failed to convert the try.

At 16-0 up, SWD would have been hopeful of pressing on, but Williams was sin-binned in the 50th minute, after repeated ruck infringements from his team, which allowed Zimbabwe No.12 Corey van Rensburg to slot a penalty and put his side on the scoreboard at 3-16.

Plenty of pressure followed from the Zimbabweans thereafter, as they looked to make their one-man advantage count, but SWD put the game beyond doubt when they got back to 15-a-side and left-wing Doveno Bowers eventually touched down in the 64th minute to make it 21-3. Bowers finished well down the flank, after Williams had spotted some space for him down the blindside.

Inside centre Rust missed his third conversion to leave the score at 21-3 and leaving Zimbabwe winless this week – having gone down 15-23 to Griquas Country Districts on Tuesday.

SWD, meanwhile, were able to celebrate their first victory at the 2010 Craven Week, after going down 18-26 to the Pumas on Day Two.
