Affies back on Television
Last week Affies played in Pretoria in an FNB Classic Clash which was broadcast live. This year they are playing KES IN Johannesburg in a Premier Interschools and that, too, will be broadcast live.
The match between the two is not an ancient match, mainly because of the split between the mainly Afrikaans-speaking schools which took part in the administrator's Cup (which had other names) and the largely English-medium schools who did not believe in playing for trophies. The two famous schools have played only since 1997 and then not every year. But every time that they played Affies won.
Results since 1997
1997: Affies won 20-13
1998: Affies won 40-23
2002: Affies won 42-15
2012: Affies won 15-13
2013: Affies won 46-6
This year neither side has shown consistency but Affies have consistently played top sides.- Waterkloof, Selborne, Monument, HTS Middelburg, Paarl Gim, Oakdale and Grey Bloem – all teams on the FNB Top 20. The only teams that KES have played who are on the Top 20 are Selborne and Paul Roos who beat them 67-0, a massive blow.
The only opponents they have in common are Selborne College of East London.
Affies beat Selborne 14-12; KES lost to Selborne 20-11.
Last weekend Affies lost 42-31 to Grey Bloem in a splendid match, a great advert for rugby and especially schools rugby when Affies enjoyed a bigger crowd than watched the Brumbies play the Sharks in an execrable game of rugby.
Affies have made many changes from the team that played so well against Grey. In fact the only players back in the same positions are Eduan Keyter, Janco Booysen, flanks Vic Meyer and Gavin Foster and props Reinhardt Goosen and DP du Plessis. Tiaan Schmullian is still in the team but moved from right wing to outside centre while Ruan Roelofse moves from lock to eighthman.
