Another great Bishops-St Andrew's day

The two schools first met 120 years ago this year and the spirit between them has always been great – same sort of people playing the same sort of rugby, respecting each other and the game they are playing, watched by a happy crowd on the Piley Rees Field at Bishops, close to where the first match happened in 1896.

Despite a great fightback by St Andrew's Bishops came back to win this one 27-17.

Flyhalf James Macdonald opened the scoring with a try and fullback Brandon van der Westhuizen got the second to give Bishops a 12-0 lead at half time which they increased in the second half to 17-0 when left wing Seb Prentice scored.

Then came the great fightback by the boys from Grahamstown. Tom Stevens scored a try and fullback Ross Ferguson two tries and a conversion, and the score was 17-17.

That is how it was when scrumhalf Henry Makin took a tap kick at a penalty five metres from the St Andrew's line and scored.

Bishops led 22-17 when St Andrew's kicked off deep. They hammered at the Bishops line but the home side's defence held and a knock-on gave them a scrum five metres from the line. From that scrum, Rob Macdonald, the brother of the flyhalf, playing next to his brother, broke and raced nearly the length of the field to score. The final whistle went after the failed conversion attempt.

There were three other matches, all won by Bishops:
