Another Interschools in Paarl

Last week Boys' High and Gimmies had their Interschools at the stadium in Faure Street, This week, as is the custom, the Interschools, an FNB Classic Clash, is between New Orleans and Klein Nederburg, two other Paarl schools where rugby is important.

This match will again attract a great crowd to Faure Street, and regardless of who the favourites are it again promises to be a close affair, as it was last year when New Orleans won for the third year in a row.

New Orleans, who turn 30 this year, have won this Classic Clash for each of the last three years, but it seems that Klein Nederburg, whose most famous rugby Old Boy is Chester Williams, have the talent to win the match.

Season so Far

Klein Nederburg were invited to the St John's festival this year where they beat Noordheuwel 26-17 and St John's of Harare  46-17 and lost (45-21) to Waterkloof. After the St John's tournament, eight players were picked put as being the stars of the three matches. One of them was the Klein Nederburg scrumhalf  Gillroy Farmer. Possibly Klein Nederburg's  best result in the Western Cape was a draw with Hugenote of Wellington, always a strong side.

New Orleans have won five of their 11 matches and drew with De Kuilen, a strong Western Province side.

Results against Common Opponents

Paulus Joubert: Klein Nederburg won 24-7; New Orleans drew 8-8

Labori: Klein Nederburg lost 8-0; New Orleans lost 14-0

Schoonspruit: Klein Nederburg lost 18-17; New Orleans won 16-13

That suggests there is not much in it.

Representative Players

The only players from the two schools to represent Boland this year are a trio from Klein Nederburg – eighthman Iver Aanhuizen, a big man who had an outstanding Craven Week, flank Conal Brown and hooker  Gilroy Farmer. Lock Earl Adonis went to the Academy Week in Worcester.

Of those players Conal Brown was chosen for the South African Schools trials at Kempton Park after the Craven Week. He was chosen as a flank but will play lock on Saturday.

Experience

That, too, is on the side of Klein Nederburg. They have nine players starting this weekend who started in the same match last year when they only just lost. In addition there are two players from the bench last year who are starting this year. That suggests a mature team for this week's big clash. The players who started last year are Owen Krediet, who has moved from the wing, Elrich Koopman, Emilio Jacobs,  the halfbacks  Robin Hendricks and Gillroy Farmer, loose forwards  Iver Aanhuizen and Charlton Moses, Conal Brown and Taswell Singh  while Malcolm du Preez, and Aythen-Storm Farrow were on the bench.

New Orleans have three back from last year's victorious side – Brendon Fortuin, who has moved from eighthman to lock, Zubair Khan, who has moved from flank to prop and Jade Adams. The two were on the bench last year are Azanele Fatyela and Carlton Arendse.
