Big Muir win at home

The second term fixtures kicked off and Muir hosted Kirkwood on a perfect day for rugby. Muir convincingly beat a spirited Kirkwood side 51-10. The College led 29-3 at the break.

From the outset Muir stuck to their structures and had Kirkwood on the back foot. Muir opened their account with outside centre Luphelo Miggels kicking a penalty. The College forwards set a platform for the backs to play off and flyhalf Yomelela Keswa scored the first of many to come. A well worked back line more saw Miggels beat his man, step the defence and dot down under the poles. He then converted his own try.

Kirkwood put a few phases together and were rewarded with a penalty. Muir upped the intensity and ran in two tries before the break. Both tries were scored by the wing combination of Sicelo Tole and Mihlali Mosi. Miggels converted both tries.

Kirkwood dug deep and ran in a try in the first few minutes of the second half. This was a quick wake-up call for the Muir side. The team quickly settled down, played to their strengths and gained go-forward ball. Kirkwood defended well for about 10 minutes to deny the Muir onslaught on their try-line. Prop Liyabonga Masango found a gap in the defence at ruck time and crossed the line. Miggels converted to extend the Colleges lead. This try sparked the Muir side and three more Muir players crossed the line. These tries were scored my fullback Liam Human, centre and captain Lunathi Nxele and then Mosi crossed for his second. Miggels kicked only one successful conversion from the last three tries.

The Muir forwards as a unit played well together and set a solid platform for the backs to attack from. Flanks Ntiska Fisanti and Caleb Daniel did well in both tight and loose phases of the game.

Wing Sicelo Tole caused havoc with strong runs keeping the defence busy and sucking numerous defenders in to create opportunities for others to play off. Captain Lunathi Nxele led from the front and had a solid game back from injury.
