Bishops Host Neighbours

If you walk along Tullyallen Road its about 300 metres from Rondebosch to Bishops and one of the great school derbies of the Western Province, a keen rivalry that happens twice a year, at the end of the second term at Bishops and at the end of the third term at Rondebosch.

The rivalry is intense but if you go down the decades it's hard to find unsavoury incidents in nearly 40 matches each year. It is a wholesome rivalry.

Oh both schools and both sets of parents and both sets of staffs and both sets of Old Boys get tense and long for victory but there is enough well-mannered control for honourable matches.

There is one of these keen school meetings this coming weekend and the history of the games and the trend of this season suggests that they will be keen yet again.

The Season so Far

Rondebosch have played 14 matches, winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 4.

Bishops have played 10, winning six and losing 4.

Bishops have played against 5 teams in the FNB Top 20, Rondebosch 4.

Rondebosch had a good start to the season, unbeaten in their first nine matches but losing four of the next five.

Bishops have had close encounters, losing just 12-5 to Paarl Boys' High who are ranked No.1 in the Top 20, a match in which Bishops scored the only try.

History

There have been periods when one of the schools has had a long period of domination.

In the 1960s, Bishops won only once while Rondebosch won 13 times with six draws. Then Basil Bey came to Bishops and things changed. In the 1980s and 1990s Bishops won 16 times in succession and this century Bishops have won 22 times, Rondebosch five times and there was a draw.

That history is on the side of Bishops will be irrelevant on Saturday.
